"Big Red" Train Station Building Session - 11/04/01

The second of our building sessions stretched out over this weekend, this was the last session before our Fundraiser, and we wanted to get the station ready for it, even if we did not get everything done, namely the interior. : ) Tony Hedglen came down for the weekend, and Jason Spears came down for Saturday. Thanks for the help, guys!

Here is a shot of the station, you can see that we got it pretty much wrapped up. You can see the signature diamond shaped window in the front, as well as the windows, which finally came in.
Here is a close up of the side of the station, where the monorail track enters. You can see the monorail stanchion on the side here, we raised it up to accommodate numerous trains coming through our display. You can also see the beautiful side windows and arches, which enables a lot of light to get into the interior. It also helps to have a glass roof! : )
This is the back part of the station, where the trains enter. My initial thoughts on this was it was going to be a huge wall, tilted back, and then coming over. However, Tony came up with this concept, which still looks great. You can see the arches we later took out, along with the glass roof, which was redesigned later after the fundraiser. You can also see the side design of the back part.
Here is a close up shot of the back, and how the angled walls work. SNOT even. You can see the panels for the roof, it is basically just the 1x4x3 windows with some bricks around. However, we found these to be very unstable, and it needed something more sturdy.
Here is the other side of the station, you can see the panels for the roof, along with the side design.
Here is the train entrance area, you can see we accommodated the train height, as well as the entrances to each of the platforms. The windows on top are for the walkway from the entrances to the second track. You can also see some minifigs used for testing, and the garage door Tony forgot to put in the platform entrance. FIRED!!!!
Here is a shot of the start of the monorail stop. You can see the gray arches, needed for the roof support, and the staircase. Notice how the other side of the platform didn't have a staircase. You can also see the door of the entrance to the office area, all of that changed between the fundraiser and GATS in January of 2002. You can also see the windows put there so you can see the monorail going inside.
Here is a close up of the diamond window, inspired by Amy Hughes beautiful office building she built for various shows.
Here is a shot of the side, we used the 1x1 light gray bricks with the 2x2 for the pattern, looks spiffy.
Here is another close shot of the pattern, and you can see the huge side windows.
Here is a good front shot, with the glass on roof.
Here is a detail shot of the interior, and how the monorail fits inside.
